2018 Election Season

The 2018 election season is underway, with candidates for federal and state offices working hard to share their messages and convince voters to support them.   For state offices, on November 6th, all 134 seats of the Minnesota House will be on the ballot as well as the Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, State Auditor and Secretary of State.   Only one MN Senate seat is up for election this year due to the resignation of Senate President Michelle Fischbach who assumed the office of Lt. Governor.   The primary election is on August 14th with high-profile primaries in the Governor and Attorney General races as well as primaries in some House races.   The primaries will finalize which candidates are on the ballot for the November election.   Minnesotans can expect much information through the media, social media, direct mail and candidates stopping at your door.  With Governor Dayton not running again, that open seat is expected to result in a very competitive race.

The campaign season provides a unique opportunity for MANA members to share your message with elected officials and candidates about the importance of CRNAs to the state and their community.   This is an important time to be involved in the process and gain support for the issues of concern to CRNAs.

Below is a list of ways you can be involved:

  • Meet with local legislators and candidates – watch for community legislative briefings or other events where you can meet candidates and hear their perspective on issues important to CRNAs and your patients.
  • Talk with candidates individually or with other CRNAs in your community – legislators and candidates are eager to hear from you about the issues that impact your practice.   Take the opportunity to talk with legislators or candidates individually when you see them at events or around the community.    Even better, meet them for coffee to specifically talk about CRNA issues — we can help assist if you’d like to do that.
  • Volunteer in campaign activities –Offer to help candidates you support with literature drops, parades, phone calling or other activities.   This is very much appreciated by candidates and they remember who helped them in their election efforts.
  • Contribute to campaign committees - We need a Governor and legislators who support the CRNAs in their district.  Even a $25 or $50 contribution from a constituent is meaningful.  And, you can use the campaign finance refund program and get up to $50 per individual / $100 per couple refunded from the state (see info below).

MANA will be continuing our efforts to educate candidates and policy makers on the issues of importance to CRNAs in their districts - - nothing replaces the impact of personal contact by CRNA constituents when you can tell your own story and let them know the important health care service you provide to your community.

The PCR (Political Contribution Refund) program is a great option for contributing to candidates you support.  You will be fully reimbursed from the State of Minnesota for your contribution to a candidate participating in the program of up to $50 per person or $100 per married couple.  The program is limited to one refund per person, per calendar year.

When you make your contribution to a candidate, ask them for a PCR receipt for your donation.  You will then need to fill out the PCR application form and send it to the Minnesota Revenue Department.  The State will send you a check in the mail.
